A new Steam Deck does not come with an obvious tour of its shortcuts, so a few of the most useful features are easy to miss. This guide covers the ones people search for right after unboxing: screenshots, playing on a TV, resetting the device, and pulling up the keyboard. How to take a screenshot on Steam Deck

The screenshot shortcut is a button combo, not a single key.

  1. Press and hold the Steam button (bottom left).

  1. Set the TV to the correct HDMI input.
  2. Pair a controller over Bluetooth, or plug one into the dock, since the built-in controls are harder to reach when the Deck is docked.
  3. Open Settings, then Display, to adjust the external resolution and refresh rate if the picture looks off.

Keep the Deck ventilated while docked. It still runs its fan, so do not bury it under other gear.

How to factory reset your Steam Deck

A factory reset wipes the device and reinstalls SteamOS. Do this before selling it, or as a last resort when software problems will not clear. Back up anything you care about first, because this erases everything.

  1. Open the Settings menu from the Quick Access area.
  2. Go to the System tab.
  3. Scroll to the recovery or reset options and choose Factory Reset.
  4. Confirm, then let the device do its thing. It will restart into a clean SteamOS install.

If the Deck will not boot far enough to reach Settings, Valve provides a recovery image you can flash to a USB drive and boot from. That path reinstalls the operating system from scratch, so keep it in mind if the normal reset is unreachable.

How to bring up the on-screen keyboard

Any time you need to type without a physical keyboard, use the combo:

  • Hold the Steam button and press X.

The virtual keyboard pops up over whatever you are doing. It works in games, in Desktop mode, and in the store. This one shortcut solves most "the game wants text and I cannot type" moments, which is a common reason a game sits in the Playable rather than Verified tier.

Starter settings worth changing first

A handful of tweaks make the Deck noticeably better on day one.

  • Cap your frame rate. In the Quick Access menu (the three-dot button), set a 30 or 40 frames per second cap for demanding games. This is the biggest single win for battery life.
  • Adjust the TDP. Lowering the power sent to the chip for light games extends your session without hurting how they play.
  • Set up per-game profiles. Save different performance settings for each game so you do not re-tune every launch.
  • Turn on the battery percentage. It is off by default in some views, and seeing the exact number helps you plan around your remaining charge.
  • Enable an SD card. A microSD card massively expands storage. Format it in Settings and install straight to it.
