What is Dota 2?

Dota 2 is Valve's free-to-play MOBA, short for multiplayer online battle arena. Two teams of five players each pick a hero and fight to destroy the other team's base, a giant structure called the Ancient. It is one of the deepest competitive games ever made, and it is completely free, which is a big part of why it has been going strong since 2013. If you have heard of it mostly through The International, the tournament famous for record-breaking prize money, this is the game behind it.

Dota 2 has a reputation for being hard. That reputation is earned. But the basic idea is simple, and the game itself is one of the more generous free titles on Steam because nothing that affects gameplay is ever behind a paywall.

Is Dota 2 free?

Yes, and more completely than most free games. Every one of the game's heroes is unlocked from the moment you install it. You never grind for characters and you never pay to access one. Compare that to other games in the genre where the roster is drip-fed or locked behind currency.

What Valve sells is cosmetics. Hero skins (called sets), couriers, wards, announcer packs, and the seasonal Battle Pass when one is running. None of it changes stats or gives you an edge. It is all appearance. That is the whole business model, and it is why the competitive scene trusts the game to stay balanced. If you want to see what your accumulated cosmetics are worth, our Steam inventory value tool can total a public inventory against live market prices.

Where Dota came from

Dota did not start as a Valve game. It started as a fan-made custom map for Blizzard's Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos and its Frozen Throne expansion, back in the early 2000s. The map was called Defense of the Ancients, or DotA. A series of community modders built and maintained it, most famously the pseudonymous developer known as IceFrog.

The mod got so popular that Valve hired IceFrog and built a standalone sequel on its own engine. That became Dota 2, which entered public beta in 2011 and released fully in 2013. So the game you play today is the direct descendant of a Warcraft III mod, rebuilt as a real product. Valve has a long habit of doing exactly this, turning mods and small teams into full games. You can see the pattern across the whole Valve games list.

The heroes

Dota 2 has more than 120 heroes, and the roster keeps growing as Valve adds new ones. Each hero has a unique kit of four or more abilities, a role on the team, and a spot in the draft. Some are melee bruisers, some are ranged spellcasters, some exist to support and protect their teammates, and some are late-game monsters that start weak and become unstoppable if the game runs long.

Heroes are loosely grouped by attribute (Strength, Agility, Intelligence, and Universal) and by role (carry, support, mid, offlane, and so on). Because every hero is available every game, drafting and counter-picking is a big part of the strategy at every level.

How to play Dota 2

Here is the loop in plain terms.

  1. Pick a hero. Ten players draft or select, five per team.
  2. Head to a lane. The map has three lanes (top, middle, bottom) connected by a jungle. In the early game you farm gold and experience by last-hitting enemy creeps, the waves of AI minions that march down each lane.
  3. Level up and buy items. Gold buys items from the shop that make your hero stronger. Killing enemies, creeps, and neutral jungle monsters all feed your economy.
  4. Push toward the base. Each lane is guarded by towers you have to knock down to advance. Behind them are barracks, and behind those, the Ancient.
  5. Win team fights and destroy the Ancient. The team that breaks through and destroys the enemy Ancient wins. A match usually runs 30 to 45 minutes, sometimes much longer.

New players should not expect to understand it all at once. The game has a lot of hidden mechanics, and the honest truth from experienced players on r/DotA2 and the Steam forums is that the learning curve is steep. The common advice is to start with a small pool of simple heroes, play the tutorial and bot matches first, and use the newer behavior and matchmaking systems that try to keep fresh accounts away from toxic veterans. Do not judge the game by your first ten losses.

The International

The International, or TI, is Dota 2's annual world championship and the reason a lot of people have heard of the game at all. For years it held the record for the largest prize pool in esports history, funded in large part by a share of Battle Pass sales from the community. A single tournament has paid out more than 40 million dollars in past years. Winning TI is the biggest achievement in the game, and the event is a major reason the pro scene has stayed so strong.

FAQ

Is Dota 2 free to play? Yes, fully. Every hero is unlocked from the start and nothing that affects gameplay is ever sold. Valve only sells cosmetic items.

Is Dota 2 hard to learn? Yes, it is one of the harder competitive games to pick up. The mechanics run deep and matches are long. Starting with a few simple heroes and bot matches makes the first weeks much easier.
