Steam trading cards explained

Steam trading cards are collectible drops you earn by playing eligible games, and their main use is crafting a full set into a badge that gives you XP toward your Steam level. You can also buy, sell, and trade the cards on the Community Market, which is where the small economy around them lives. How you get trading cards

Cards drop while you play, not from a menu or a button.

Play eligible games. Only games that support trading cards drop them. When you launch and play one, cards land in your inventory over time.
Half the set from playtime. For most games you earn roughly half of a set's cards just by playing. The rest you get from other players or the market.
Purchases trigger drops. Buying a game that supports cards can grant a few card drops linked to your spending.

Find a game where you hold a full set of cards.
Click Ready and confirm the craft.
The cards are consumed, and you get a badge plus XP toward your Steam level.
You can level the same badge up several times if you keep gathering full sets, and you may get a booster pack, an emoticon, or a profile background as a bonus drop.

Buying, selling, and trading cards

You rarely get a full set from one game just by playing, so the market fills the gap.

The Community Market. You can list spare cards for sale or buy the ones you are missing. Most cards sell for a few cents each, though foils and cards from popular games go for more.
Trading with other players. You can trade cards directly with friends or through trading communities, swapping duplicates for cards you need.
Booster packs as income. Some people sell their booster packs rather than open them, since a pack has real market value.

Prices are small per card, so nobody gets rich here. The point is finishing sets cheaply so you can craft badges and level up. A word of caution: only trade through Steam's own market and trade windows. No legitimate card trade needs your password or a login on an outside site.
